Real obedience for Joplin dogs, taught where it counts

Joplin is the far western end of our service area and one of the towns the owner named first when we asked where his clients come from. Whether your dog needs the basics or has a problem that has been growing for a while, the path is the same: private lessons or an immersive board and train, then a handover session so you can hold the standard at home.

Joplin, Missouri

Built for how Joplin dogs actually live

Joplin sits mostly in Jasper County with its southern edge in Newton County, and Interstate 44 is the line that connects it to Springfield and the rest of our service area. US Route 71 and Interstate 49 run north and south, and old Route 66 still runs through town as 7th Street. It is a real drive from the Springfield side, so most Joplin dogs come to us for board and train, where the travel happens twice rather than every week.

The city's park system covers close to a thousand acres and includes about fifteen miles of walking and biking trails, with Wildcat Park holding the Shoal Creek Nature Center and the Chert Glades, plus Schifferdecker Park and Mercy Park. That is a lot of shared path, and shared path is where pulling, lunging and a recall that only works at home stop being small problems.

Loose-leash walking is the fourth lesson of the basic obedience package for exactly this reason, and a 15 ft training leash comes with it. If you want the version that ends with your dog reliable off leash and steady around other dogs and people, that is the two week board and train rather than lessons.

What The Training Covers

What your dog learns with us in Joplin

The core commands

Come, sit, place, down, heel and off. The same six commands sit at the base of every Off Leash K9 package, whether you train in lessons or send your dog for board and train.

Loose-leash walking

The fourth basic obedience lesson is loose-leash walking, so your dog walks beside you instead of towing you down the sidewalk. A 15 ft training leash is included with the package.

Off-leash reliability

Built through the two week board and train, where your dog works off leash, outdoors, with real distractions in play. It is a board and train outcome, not something lessons alone deliver.

Manners that hold up in public

Door, greeting and meal manners, plus socialization around people and other dogs and high-level distraction proofing, all covered in the two week board and train.

Daily updates, then a full handover

Your trainer sends daily updates with a photo or video while your dog is with them, and finishes with a two hour one-on-one session showing you how to handle everything your dog has learned.

What Southwest Missouri dog owners say

“In the past, I had always trained my dogs at home myself, with a business and a family and a one year-old giant schnauzer that wasn’t possible. The basics sit, stay, lay down and potty training were easy enough. Where we were struggling was excited, behavior, manners, and leash pulling.…”

Jason McMullenVerified Google review

“So pleased with this company from start to finish. My free phone consultation was with Maegan. She was so kind and answered all my questions. Maegan helped me with the decision that the two-week board and train would be our best option.…”

Katelynn KingVerified Google review

“I honestly can’t recommend them enough so I figured I would give a very detailed review of my experience. My 9 month old Cane Corso was pretty well mannered for the most part but I couldn’t train him on everything.…”

Questions

Dog training in Joplin, answered

Do you train dogs in Joplin, MO?

Yes. Joplin is inside the area Off Leash K9 Training Southwest Missouri covers. We are not a walk-in storefront, so your trainer confirms the training location with you when you book. One thing worth knowing up front: we generally do not train dogs inside your house. It is easy for a dog to listen at home, and a dog that only listens at home has not really learned the command. Training in an unfamiliar place, with distractions, is what makes obedience hold up anywhere.

How does board and train work if I live in Joplin?

You drop your dog off and pick them up, which is the part most Joplin owners ask about first. For the one and two week programs your dog lives and trains at the trainer's home for the whole stay, not in a kennel run. You get daily updates with a photo or video of the work, and at the end you sit down for a two hour one-on-one session where your trainer shows you exactly how to handle everything your dog has learned so it holds up once you are home.

How much does dog training cost in Joplin?

Obedience lessons start at $650 for the four-lesson basic package and $950 for the eight-lesson basic and advanced package. Board and train runs $1,800 for one week, $2,800 for two weeks, and $3,800 for the behavior modification program. Every price is listed on the plans and pricing page. Payment plans are available. Call us today to learn more about payment options. Those prices are the same wherever you drive in from, including Joplin.

How old does my puppy have to be before training starts?

We do not start e-collar training until a dog is at least five months old, and that is our own stated rule on the FAQ page, not a rough guide. If your puppy is younger than that, Basic Marker Mastery is the right starting point: four reward-based sessions using a clicker and marker work to build come, sit, place and loose-leash walking. There is also a 10-Day Pawsitive Foundation Puppy Board and Train for puppies between twelve and twenty-four weeks. Owners in Joplin usually start there and move up once the puppy is old enough.

Is Joplin too far for you to take my dog?

No. Joplin is one of the towns the owner named when he listed the areas this location serves, and Interstate 44 runs straight between Joplin and the Springfield side of our area. Because of the distance, most Joplin clients choose board and train rather than weekly lessons, so the trip happens at drop-off and again at pick-up instead of every session. Call us and we will talk through which program fits the drive as well as the dog.
