Where Oliver Started

Oliver was a young dog who tested limits, which his owner is quick to say is simply what dogs do. She did not want a trainer to hand her back a finished dog. She wanted to learn how to work with her own.

The Training Journey

They chose one-on-one obedience lessons: eight sessions, once a week, with Kasey working both ends of the leash.

Each lesson covered one command, and the week between lessons was homework. His owner’s own account of how it went is the honest version of dog training that a sales page will not give you: the harder she worked with Oliver between lessons, the better he got. She puts that in capital letters, more than once.

What she credits Kasey with is not obedience so much as translation. Kasey taught the two of them to listen to each other, which is the part that keeps working long after the lessons end.

Oliver’s Wins

Oliver holds a heel, a duration down, a sit and a place, among other commands.

The more useful win is the one underneath: his owner knows how to ask, how to follow through, and what to do when he tests a boundary. That does not fade the way a trained behavior can.

What It Changed at Home

Her verdict was that Kasey gave her every tool and resource she needed, and that learning to work with her own dog was something money cannot buy.

Why This Story Matters

Lessons and board and train are different tools, and the difference is not price. In a board and train the dog does the learning first and you are handed the controls at the end. In lessons you learn together, every week, and the pace depends on what you do between sessions.
